Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Chartered Counselling Psychologist?

Psychology is the scientific study of thoughts, emotions and behaviours. Psychologists examine the various aspects of human experiences. While psychological knowledge is often applied to the assessment and treatment of mental health problems, it is also directed towards understanding and solving problems in many different spheres of human activity in everyday life. The majority of psychologists are involved in some kind of therapeutic role, practicing in clinical, counselling, organisational or educational settings. Many do scientific research on a wide range of topics related to mental processes and behaviour. Some are employed in industrial settings, or in other areas such as sports, health, and the media, as well as in forensic investigation.

Counselling Psychology involves the specialist application of scientific understanding to the treatment of health and mental health difficulties. Counselling Psychologists facilitate people across the lifespan to address their emotional, psychological, behavioural and physical needs. The aim is to improve well-being, resolve crisis and alleviate distress to live more fulfilling lives. Counselling Psychologists are fully trained in assessment, formulation, intervention, diagnostic work, report writing and research. They provide therapeutic interventions using a variety of evidence-based approaches to meet the needs of the individual. The approaches they use include cognitive behavioural therapy, humanistic, psychodynamic and/or analytic approaches.

Chartered Counselling Psychologists are Psychologists that are registered with their professional body, The Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI). They sign up to abide by ethical practices and standards in the way they work.
